Ports of Oman: which port suits which cargo
This is a guide to the ports in Oman for a business deciding where its cargo should land: which port suits which cargo and route, what happens there, and what we do at each. We are Ruby Shipping Line, an Omani agent for the vessel, the cargo, the clearance and the road. Sohar is our home port, we work Salalah as well, and our office is in Ghala, Muscat. Depths, berths and capacities change and belong to the port operators, so this page is about what each port is for.
Ports in Oman for a cargo shipper: the short answer
- Sohar, in the north. Container and bulk cargo, our two services from India and Pakistan, and the road to Muscat and the UAE.
- Salalah, in the south. A transhipment hub in Dhofar, and the natural port for a consignee in Dhofar.
- Duqm, on the Arabian Sea between the two. Break bulk, project cargo and dry bulk, inside the Special Economic Zone at Duqm.
- Port Sultan Qaboos, in Muscat. It stopped handling commercial cargo in 2014 and is a cruise port. Not an option for cargo.
Where the ports sit, and why the road matters
Sohar is on the Batinah coast, the plain along the Gulf of Oman between Muscat and the border with the UAE. Salalah is in Dhofar, the southern governorate, on the Arabian Sea. Duqm is in Al Wusta, also on the Arabian Sea, a long way south of Muscat. All three lie outside the Strait of Hormuz.
The ports are far apart. A port that suits the vessel can be a long road from the consignee, and a haul from one end of the country to the other is a routing decision, not only a rate. Start from the door the cargo has to reach and work back to the port.
Sohar: the north, the subcontinent and the UAE by road
Sohar is the north's container and bulk port, and it is our home port. It has separate terminals for containers, general cargo and liquid bulk. Cargo operations moved here when Port Sultan Qaboos closed to commercial cargo, so cargo for Muscat now finishes its trip by road, from Sohar or from wherever else it landed. Sohar suits cargo for Muscat, the Batinah and the north of the country, and cargo whose consignee is across the border in the UAE.
We sell slots on two services that carry cargo into Sohar from India and Pakistan, and out of it. FENG HAI 66 calls Sohar, Karachi and Mundra. DEDE KORKUT calls Sohar, Karachi, Nhava Sheva and Mundra. For Pakistan cargo the two are interchangeable; for Indian cargo the port the supplier ships from decides which one. We are not the carrier on either: the shipper receives the principal's bill of lading, signed by us as agent, and the principal's terms, time bar and forum govern any claim on it. The origin end is on shipping from India to Oman and shipping from Pakistan to Oman.
For a consignee in the UAE, Sohar is a road leg from the border. The goods either pass through Oman in transit or are entered here first, and that choice is made before the vessel arrives: cargo for the UAE through Sohar sets out both.
The SOHAR Freezone beside the port is outside Oman's customs territory. Goods held there are declared for import only when they leave it for the mainland.
Salalah: transhipment, and the south
Salalah is in Dhofar on the Arabian Sea, beside the main east-west shipping lane. It is a transhipment hub: on many lanes cargo is discharged there, waits for a connecting vessel and is loaded again, which is why so much cargo touching Oman touches Salalah. The port has a container terminal and a general cargo terminal.
Discharging at Salalah suits a consignee in Dhofar. For a consignee in the north it means a long road leg. And a routing transhipped at Salalah has two schedules that can slip where a direct call has one, which is often why its rate is lower. Compare the options on the cost to the door, not the sea freight alone.
We work Salalah as well: we attend vessel calls there, file the entry for cargo discharged there and truck it from the terminal.
Duqm: bulk and project cargo in the economic zone
Duqm is in Al Wusta, and the port sits inside the Special Economic Zone at Duqm, close to the country's major oil and gas and mining projects. The port lists break bulk, project cargo and dry bulk among the cargo it handles, and it has a dry dock and ship repair yard. For heavy pieces bound for a project in the zone, it may be the port that fits.
We do not attend vessels at Duqm, so ask about a specific cargo rather than assume. The entry is lodged in Bayan the same way as anywhere else in Oman, and the road from Duqm is inside Oman, but whether we take the whole file there depends on the cargo.
Two names that are not for your container
Port Sultan Qaboos, at Muttrah in Muscat, stopped handling commercial cargo in 2014 and is a cruise port now. Our office is in Ghala, Muscat, but the operation is at the port.
Mina Al Fahal, also near Muscat, is where crude oil and refinery products are loaded onto tankers offshore, through subsea pipelines and single buoy moorings. It is an oil export point, not a port for general cargo.
Choosing between the ports
Three questions settle most choices:
- Where does the cargo have to end up? Muscat and the Batinah point to Sohar, and so can the UAE. Dhofar points to Salalah. A project in the Duqm zone points to Duqm.
- What calls at the origin? From Karachi, Mundra and Nhava Sheva our two services come into Sohar. From further away the service on offer may be a transhipped one through a hub, often Salalah, and the port of discharge is whatever the connecting vessel calls.
- What is the cargo? Containers go where the services call. Out of gauge and project pieces need a port that can lift them and a road that can carry them from the quay.
Where no service we sell calls the port you need, we arrange the cargo through partners on lanes we do not sell ourselves, and we name who carries it before you book. The booking, the cut offs and the draft bill of lading are on freight forwarding.
Customs and the road, whichever port
The customs entry does not change with the port. Bayan, the Directorate General of Customs electronic single window, is Oman's one customs system, used at seaports, land borders and airports alike. We file the import entry in house through Bayan, in the importer's name and on their written authorisation. Duty follows the GCC common external tariff for the code, and VAT is assessed at import. Customs clearance sets out the filing and the release.
Once the entry is released, the box moves with our own trucks and contracted hauliers from the terminal to your premises, inside Oman or across a GCC border: land transport. Detention stops only when the empty is back at the depot the line named, which may be near the port of discharge. A port far from the door means a long delivery and a long return run as well, so price both when you choose the port.
What we attend, and what we do not
The ports we attend ourselves are Sohar, our home port, and Salalah. There we are at the berth for the ship as port agency, book the cargo, lodge the entry and run the road, on one file. At Duqm and at any other Omani port we do not attend vessels; ask us about the entry and the road for a specific cargo.
We were registered in Muscat in 2025. We are not the cheapest and we have no global network, and where another agent suits a port or a cargo better, we say so.
Get a rate: send the cargo, where it loads, where in Oman or the GCC it has to end up, and when it is ready.
